Opening May 8th is the two person show of wife and husband team, Margaux & Walter Kent. Margaux is known throughout the city, blogosphere and beyond for her incredible hand bound books and book necklaces made from antique and worn leather. Her polaroid transfers are equally as haunting and lovely. Walter has recently returned home from war overseas and has a classical painting style. Together they present, 'The Only Place Left' Opening night will feature a special trunk show of Margaux's jewelry from The Black Spot Books and their combined artistry of Peg & Awl. Hilary White: 'Altar' Solo Exhibition. March 6th, from 6-10 p.m.

If you were at the Heart Show or made it in afterwards to see all the amazing hearts, I'm sure you noticed the incredible 3-d heart featuring boxers, bears and victorian cameos by Hilary White. Her upcoming solo show, 'Altar' promises to be filled with these amazing assemblages, so don't miss it!

Hilary's statement from her website:

The arts as early as the 4th century of the Byzantine era through the early Gothic period of the 12th century were created and commissioned for the sole use of the church. Most artists of this time were limited to creating images that were deemed “useful” to extend the gospels to the poor and illiterate including the visual depictions of the old and new testaments in places of worship. During the end of the Gothic period a more pluralistic view of art emerged.

In the early 19th century a phrase was coined “Art for the sake of Art”. Which became a sort of mantra for the creative individuals of that era. This new movement meant a total disengagement of art from any religious, moral, or utilitarian function, art meant to stand alone as a means unto itself.

My work is an attempt to wrestle with these two approaches, creating out of the struggle to join my personal faith in God into my mixture of influences; insecurities, doubts, vanities, and culture. The work is an exploration of theology and imagination, Christ working through chaos and diluted ethos to establish hope, a reconciler for the graceful and the grotesque.

The Toothless Cat gallery is please to announce Wild Things, a three- person exhibition featuring works by Monique Ligons, Bird Reynolds, and Joe Leonard. The singular bodies of work from each artist form a distinct anatomy that represents animals taking on human characteristics, particularly the explicit behaviors of gang violence, war and burlesque. Through the unique and distinctive voices of each artist, the exhibition reverberates a collective commentary on humanity and the “wild” emotions and actions we feel and choose. As satirical reflections of us, the exhibition has a complex dual tonality of mischief and glamour, highlighting the contrasts and contraditcitons in our natures.

Opening Reception November 21, 2009 6-10 pm!!!!

About The Artists:

Monique Ligons:

Philadelphia artist, Monique Ligons was destined from birth to be an artist- creativity flows through her veins. Drawing ever since she could hold a crayon, Monique was constantly encouraged by her mother to hone her talents. She began her formal creative education in 1989 after acceptance into the prestigious arts high school, CAPA. Ligons continued into the college level at the University of the Arts, where she received her BFA in Animation in 1997. Ligons' post-grad years were spent teaching animation at her alma mater and Animation Arts in N.J. She simultaneously freelanced as an animator, character designer and storyboard artist which she continues to do. Monique has had the privilege of working on a number of high profile projects- notably, Richard Linklater’s “Scanner Darkly”, the music video "I'm Impressed," for They Might Be Giants and Guitar Hero’s commercial for their handheld game. She has recently been sought after to produce cover art for C.O.P. magazines' international issue. Having only participated in a limited number of gallery exhibitions over the years, Monique's recent decision to actively pursue greater visibility in this arena has been welcomed with great enthusiasm and praise..

Bird Reynolds:

Philadelphia artist Bird Reynolds started his artistic pursuit by writing graffiti in the streets. His work has appeared on walls and within galleries such as Jinxed. Reynolds is mostly self- taught, having been in school for a brief time. He is also a re-known and sought after tattoo artist at Philadelphia Eddie’s Tattoo.

Joe Leonard:

Joe Leonard was born in Philadelphia in 1968. He studied painting at Temple University/ Tyler School of Art. After graduating from Tyler magna cum laude in 1992 he pursued an apprenticeship as tattoo artist. In 1995 Joe migrated to Santa Rosa California to open his own tattoo studio, Monkey Wrench. Showing both throughout the US and overseas. Joe continues to paint. In 2008 Snakeface Publishing released "Offerings from the Bloody Bucket," a book of 150 paintings that he had executed between 2003 and 2007.

This work has far exceeded our expectations! All artists will be in attendance at the opening. A night not to be missed!!! Look here for a preview of the work this week........

mastadon stopped by the gallery to see paul's work when they were in town to play & got a chance to finally see leviathan framed in its 200 lbs beast of a frame.

Thank you to everyone who braved the terrible weather to join us for tasty mini donuts and the awesome madlibs with paul romano on october 24! due to the weather being so terrible, we are hosting another madlibs event tomorrow night, november 6, from 5-9, (most likely later) with paul hosting another evening of his madlibs as well as celebrating his birthday!!!!! also, some of the work will be rotated to include new pieces, which, if you have already seen the show, are equally as epic and amazing.

the toothless cat is pleased to announce the forthcoming solo exhibition of artist paul romano this october 10 from 2pm-11pm. paul has worked in the music industry for over 10 years, creating the album artwork for popular bands such as mastodon & godflesh among others. we had the great fortune of being introduced to paul's work in person via a visit to his studio this summer, & were blown away. the exhibition promises to show a lot of the original work used for the album covers, but in this new context of our gallery, they gain a new meaning, transcending their original intent. the work itself is executed with classical precision from a master, at times steeped in myth & with a dark aesthetic. look out for a studio visit on fecal face soon! this show is not to be missed! x

Toothless Cat loves Monique Ligons

Monique's Gangster Gorilla painting (complete with rhinestone fronts & brass knuckles and with a handmade frame created with a barrel full of monkey toys) was the magnet that drew many folks into The Toothless Cat when we were still camped out ( & suffering from terrible music) near the stage at suite 54. I can't tell you how many times people posed for photos in front of it or asked how much she wanted for it. (there is some lucky BFF out there in Philly who this went to!) If you missed it, fear not, because we will be showing her and her animals in November along with Bird Reynolds & Joe Leonard. In the meantime, congrats Moe! on getting the upcoming cover of Australia's C.O.P. magazine, which show cases female talents from all over.
